The Application Process

Once the Marjot Foundation has established fund availability, students will be invited to apply for grants.  The application consists of three parts: a two-page research proposal, a letter of recommendation from the student’s mentor, and a budget proposal.

The grant of $3000 will be divided, with $1000 going to the student, $1000 to the mentor, and $1000 covering the cost of supplies.  The budget proposal must justify all materials that will be purchased with the grant.  These materials will remain at the school after the research is finished.  Students must identify a mentor who will supervise and actively participate in the project.  The mentor may be a teacher at the high school or a scientist working in the academic or industrial sectors.

The Research Proposal

Students should consider the following questions when writing their proposals:

  1. What type of research do you want to do and why?
  2. What supplies will you need?
  3. Where will you do the research?
  4. Why do you think the research is important?
  5. How will you evaluate your data?

 

We realize that many students do not have grant-writing experience and will gladly provide assistance with the application process when necessary.

School Responsibility

    The superintendent and/or principal of the school must agree that the work may be conducted at the school when appropriate. Furthermore, the school must assume liability for any work connected with the project; i.e. transportation to and from a research site, any injury that might occur during the research, travel to present the data, etc.
